Written for Erica Drayton’s prompt Breath on Erica Drayton Writes.
It started as a dare. Me, alone, buried in the forest. I thought I had it licked until I called out for the others. No one responded. An hour passed so I decided to call Shannon. Her phone rang. She was close. I called out. Silence.
My phone battery died shortly afterward. That’s when the scratching began. The coffin shook as something climbed on top. My eyes widened. My body trembled as the lid flew off.
It hovered over me–black, hairy, yellow eyes. Sharp teeth greeted me as its mouth widened. My body froze as I took my last breath.
